They shall walk upright on two legs. ” (473–474, 190c–d) And, continues Aristophanes, “since their natural form had been cut in two, each one longed for its own other half, and so they could throw their arms about each other, weaving themselves together, wanting to grow together” (474, 191a). Plato’s Symposium 39 Aristophanes does not personify Eros as many of the other speakers have done but depicts her / him / it in terms of the energies and desires that aspire to reconstitute an original, mythical wholeness that has been cut in half.

This is also the reason why the competition between Aristophanes and Socrates constitutes the core of the Symposium. Four-Legged and Two-Legged Creatures The remarkable complexities of the Symposium now bring us to Aristophanes’ speech eulogizing Eros. He begins by describing the three kinds of spherical four-legged creatures who “in strength and power . . were terrible, and they had great ambitions. They made an attempt on the gods” (473, 190b). Because of their rebelliousness they were punished.

In this respect the Symposium is quite radical because it indirectly questions Socrates’ philosophical practices by drawing attention to the unreliability of oral reports as they are presented in the Symposium. In the Symposium Plato presents a radical critique of mimetic representation by pointing at its limitations, not by providing a direct philosophical critique as was done in many other contexts, most notably in the Republic. Instead Plato has gone to great pains to point out that all of the narrators / reporters—including Socrates himself—are only able to present a partial or slanted report of what really happened at the banquet, or in Socrates’ case during his meetings with Diotima.
